Two guest speakers from the Edmonton finance community shared their experiences and insights to a diverse group of attendees. The panel covered a range of topics related to women's leadership, diversity, equity & inclusion, and success in various industries. On March 14, Edmonton Women in Finance (EWF) hosted the 4th '100 Ways to Break Into Finance' event, offering insights into various finance-related perspectives for post-graduates.
We were excited to have digital interview tips shared by Evangeline Berube from Robert Half, mental health session with Sydney Bennell from MacEwan University, insightful career advice from interactive panelist interviews and breakout rooms.

Persuasion& Negotiation with Fontini Iconomopoulos

Over 200 participants joined EWF and CFA for this event. This is EWF's second event in partnership with CFA.
We were excited to have Fontini Iconomopoulos share with us the secrets of being likeable in a negotiation without giving away everything. Fotini Iconomopoulos walked us through how to use the science behind the principles of persuasion to get what you want. Likeability, scarcity, social proof, and more, weave their way into the negotiation process to set us up for success. By applying these rules, with your negotiation objective in mind, we will have a deal before we know it!

Networking in the Age of Social Distancing

Edmonton Women in Finance (EWF) hosted our first online event with CFA Society Edmonton where we discussed networking during the new norm, and had a live Q&A session with our audience. We were joined by Sameer Somal, CEO & Co-Founder of Blue Ocean Global Technology.
Sameer Somal is a frequent speaker at conferences on digital transformation, online reputation management, search engine optimization, relationship capital and ethics. Fundamental to his work at Blue Ocean Global Technology, Sameer leads collaboration with an exclusive group of PR, Law, Digital Marketing, and Web-Development agency partners. He helps clients build, monitor and repair their digital presence. Sameer is a published writer and Internet Defamation subject matter expert witness. In collaboration with the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, he authors continuing legal education (CLE) programs and is a member of the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) 2030 Task Force.
The New Normal: Life in Business After COVID-19
The Edmonton Women in Finance hosted their inaugural virtual series event titled “The New Normal: Life in Business After COVID-19”.
The event featured Linnea McKercher - VP, Portfolio Manager, Canadian Western Bank, Carla Madra – Partner, Assurance and Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS), Ernst & Young LLP, and Jill Urbanoski - Manager, Employee Engagement, Alberta Investment Management Corporation.
Panelists discussed their experience on adjusting to working from home and overcoming challenges, shared tips on how to stay mentally healthy in pandemic, and also shared their thoughts about future life in business after Covid-19.

EWF Company Visit AIMCo

Edmonton Women in Finance (EWF) hosted our first Company Visit at AIMCo. This event is a part of an on-going program at EWF that introduces post-secondary business students to the working world of finance in Edmonton. Fifteen students from University of Alberta and MacEwan University participated in the inaugural tour and were introduced to our experts in Business Technology, Performance Analytics and Portfolio Management. After the tour, Dale Mac Master (CIO of AIMCo), and Sandra Lau (Executive Vice President, Fixed Income), met with the group for a hearty conversation and discussed a range of topics on students’ minds.
A Night at AGA with EWF

On October 9, Edmonton Women in Finance (EWF) hosted a student focus event titled A Night at AGA with EWF.
The event was joined by panellists from E&Y, Deloitte, Canadian Western Bank and AIMCo, where they discussed experiences as young professionals, from their first job search to insights to help our students succeed.
EWF also shared their Student Programs, such as the Student Mentorship Program, On-Site Program Visits, and Resume and Interview Workshop.

The event was moderated by Laura Inglis from Bennett Jones LLP, the title sponsor for the event, and was joined by panelists, Don Iveson, Mayor of Edmonton, Vivian Manasc, Senior Principle at Manasc Isaac, and Christopher Fowler, President and Chief Executive Officer of CWB.
Panelist discussed the importance of diversity in the workplace, the efforts that they have made to create changes and the barriers that still exist today.
Summer Social: Mentorship Kickoff and Networking Mixer

Edmonton Women in Finance hosted our first annual summer networking mixer at the Polar Park Brewing Company.
The event featured guest speaker, Jane Halford of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), where she talked to us about board governance and having your voice heard at the table.
EWF also unveiled its Student and Professional Mentorship Program. We provided over 100 students and professionals the opportunity to mingle and network.
A Hundred Ways to Break into the Finance Industry

Edmonton Women in Finance hosted its first ever post-secondary event on March 19, 2019 at 5:30 PM. The focus of the event was to invite students on the University of Alberta campus to learn more about what the Finance Industry has to offer.
The event featured professionals from each career stream from major financial institutions. Students had the opportunity to network with professionals from the Finance industry and learn more about the wide array of possibilities in the field including: bankers, asset managers, accountants, consultants, programmers, and more.
International Women's Day: Balance for Better Networking Event
March 8, 2019
AIMCO, Finning International Inc., Stantec, Edmonton Women in Finance, Catalyst and 30% Club Canada, sponsored a roundtable facilitated by Linda Hohol and Brock Gibson, with C-Suite leaders who discussed priority challenges such as culture and key enablers of training, gender balance in domestic responsibilities, and leadership accountability. The group concluded with a call to action for leaders to establish goals, develop and resource a robust I&D strategy by leveraging existing resources such as the CEO Blueprint and Directors’ Playbook.
Following the C-Suite roundtable, outcomes were shared at a public networking event that featured a special panel discussion titled “Global Perspectives on Advancing Gender Diversity”, exploring the diversity journeys of three countries – Sweden, the United Kingdom and Canada – to address how we can champion progress for women as progress for all. The panel discussed the current state and key success factors in their respective countries, and took questions from an engaged audience of over 130 people from diverse management levels, industries, and backgrounds.
Edmonton Women In Finance First Mixer

The event was enjoyed by a broad network of women in finance, where attendees mingled and tasted wine from all over the world. Amanda Knight, Founder and CEO of SRQ Training and Assessment Inc. Amanda is an early pioneer of emotional intelligence at work, Amanda has worked with hundreds of individuals, teams and leaders across a broad range of industries over the last 20 years to help them transform the way they perform, collaborate and engage every stakeholder.
Amanda spoke about her journey and in finding her voice as her career progressed. She discussed candidly the strengths that women bring to organizations and described the importance of emotional intelligence within the workplace. The presentation was enjoyed by all and Amanda gave away six personal coaching lessons to a lucky winner randomly drawn from amongst the attendees.
MacEwan University Post Secondary Networking Event

Our first University Event held on the MacEwan University campus was a memorable night. EWF was pleased to have a panel of successful Edmonton-based female leaders in finance – Jane Alm, Sandra Lau, Kim Thompson-Stringer and Elisa Hung joining us, and shared candid insights on a variety of topics, including their first mentors, experiences in finding a footing in the industry, their thoughts on work-life balance, and the list went on. The audience brought such a level of energy and eagerness and brought forward great questions one after another.
Inaugural Event: Paving the Way - Female Leaders in Finance

On September 21st, Edmonton Women in Finance (EWF) hosted its inaugural event. Sponsored by AIMCo and hosted at their office, EWF welcomed distinguished speakers Carolyn Graham, Phyllis Clark and Maria Howlinsky to discuss their career paths that have lead them to their successful positions today. The session was moderated by EWF Co-Chair Sandra Lau.
The inaugural event marked EWF’s first venture in connecting women in finance within Edmonton. Attendees found the panel discussion compelling, informative and engaging. EWF would like to thank the panelists for creating an approachable atmosphere and generating a though provoking conversation that ensured the success of the EWF launch event. Networking and refreshments followed the panel session with many connections made. The launch could not have gone more smoothly!
